Two persons killed and seven others injured after a Toyota Sienna bus suffered a brake failure and rammed into commuters in Ogun state.

The accident occurred on Saturday around 7.30am on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Gudugba village in the Ewekoro Local Government area of Ogun State.

The crash was said to have involved three vehicles – a brown Ford with the number plate AAAB 439 XB, a Toyota Sienna, with the number plate KRD 900GV and a yellow tricycle marked AKM 791 VP.

The spokesperson for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps in the state, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the incident said the accident was caused by a brake failure while the driver was trying to avoid a pothole.

He said, “According to eyewitness accounts, the Toyota Sienna driver was speeding and in an attempt to avoid a pothole, he lost control and ran into commuters by the roadside waiting to board a bus to their destinations. In the process, two people were presumed dead; a minor whose mother was alive and an old man while seven other commuters were injured. The driver of the Toyota Sienna vehicle has been arrested and taken to Itori Divisional Police Station alongside the vehicles involved in the multiple crash.”

Akinbiyi warned drivers against speeding and urged traders to stop displaying their wares on the road. He also advised commuters to always stand at designated bus stops to board vehicles to their destinations.
