Worried by the worsening state of roads in the varsity  town the President, Student Union Government (SUG) of University of Nigeria Nsukka UNN Comrade Michael Abuchi has sent Save Our Soul’ (SOS) to Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State.

According to Mr. Abuchi, some of the major roads in deteriorating condition are roads leading to university first gate and that of University market road.

Abuchi raised the alarm  in Nsukka  on Friday while speaking with newsmen on the need for Enugu State Government to urgently intervene on the roads.

He urged Ugwuanyi to come to the rescue of UNN students and other road users by urgently repairing the dilapidated portions of University Road and University Market Road leading to UNN main gate.

In his words,”governor Ugwuanyi should come to our rescue urgently before the situation gets out of hand, by repairing these portions of roads so as to avert accidents, vehicle breakdown and loss of lives.

“If nothing urgent is done the university will be entirely cut-off from Nsukka town because of deplorable condition of the roads.

“From the point the University Road has curved in and created a big gully is less than 150 metres to UNN main gate which posed a serious danger to staff, students and visitors,” he said.

The SUG president expressed concern that  the bad roads would pose a serious risk to returning students in the event  Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) suspends its ongoing nation strike.

“There will be serious pressure on these roads if ASUU suspends its strike, as there will be increase in both human and vehicular movement as result of students coming back to campus.

“University Road and University Market Road are two major roads motorists used to enter the university from first gate but these roads are in bad condition as result of damaged portions and poor drainage that allowed flooding during and after downpour.

“These bad roads will become death traps causing accidents and regular break down of vehicles and the safety of my precious students will be at risk when they will be returning to campus soon,” he said.

The students’ leader however said  that, he was optimistic Ugwuanyi would quickly come to their rescue as his government had been people oriented and always give special attention to issues concerning safety and welfare of residents.
