Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had directed the immediate gazetting of his order that the Democracy Day should now be celebrated on June 12 from the hitherto May 29, as well as the posthumous award on the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola as the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).
The House of Representatives has now approved June 12 to be marked as Democracy Day in Nigeria. The approval followed the adoption of a report on a bill seeking to amend the Public Holidays Act 2004.
Considering the report at the plenary on Thursday, the lawmakers approved the amendments to three clauses in the Act, as recommended in the report.
One of the clauses deleted May 29 as Democracy Day and replaced the date with June 12.
Recall that in June this year, President Buhari declared June 12th as the new date for the celebration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day in honor of late MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.
