Unknown gunmen suspected to be herdsmen reportedly attacked Eke town, hometown of Nigeria Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama on Monday, leaving two people severely injured in the Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.

WITHIN NIGERIA learnt that the suspected herdsmen were reported to have injured two people, including a bank manager with one of the new generation banks, identified as Maurice Onyibor, from Oma village in Eke town, while the identity of the second victim was unknown as of the time of filing this report

Eke is the hometown of both the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, and the Director General of the Voice of Nigeria, Osita Okechukwu, who buried his wife, Augustina Okechukwu, last Saturday.

According to PUNCH report, the bank manager was attacked on Sunday around Isigwu Road while going to Oma-Eke, off Eke-Egede Road.

A community source told our correspondent that the banker was driving his car to his country home at Oma Eke when the gunmen attacked him.

“On sighting the gunmen, he attempted to escape, but the gunmen shot him. We thank God that he survived as he was rushed to the hospital,” the source said.

Our correspondent gathered that the bank manager was attacked on Sunday around Isigwu Road while going to Oma-Eke, off Eke-Egede Road.

A community source told our correspondent that the banker was driving his car to his country home at Oma Eke when the gunmen attacked him.

“On sighting the gunmen, he attempted to escape, but the gunmen shot him. We thank God that he survived as he was rushed to the hospital,” the source said.

The second victim, identified as a middle-age woman, it was gathered, was attacked almost in the same location where the gunmen attacked the banker in the early hours of Monday.

The police in Enugu confirmed the two incidents, which they described as unfortunate.

In a reply to text messages on the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amaraizu, said the gunmen were still at large.

He said it would be wrong to refer to them as Fulani herdsmen.

Amaraizu said, “We don’t know the identity of the gunmen yet but the good thing is that the two victims survived the attacks. They are responding to treatment in the hospital. There was no death. “
