History is not intended to be disregarded. The events of the past are collected in history. When we go back in time, we think about the negative or positive occurrences that shaped those moments.

WITHIN NIGERIA highlighted five significant events that happened on March 8 in Nigeria history in an effort to raise awareness for enlightenment and educational purposes.

Fela Anikulapo was re-arrested over suspicion of murder

On this date, 8th of March in 1993, Fela Anikulapo Kuti was arrested for the second time over suspicion of murder.

Recall that the Afro-beat legend and four members of his Afrika ’70 organisation were accused of a conspiracy to kill one Adesanwo Shokoya by flogging him to death and they were firstly arrested in January 21, 1993.

Allegations leveled against the Afro-beat legend indicated that Fela gave the sum of six thousand Naira to three of his workers including the late Sokoya for some jobs at the popular afrika Shrine.

Fela was said to have felt cheated with the work quality and allegedly ordered them to be taken to his Ikeja residence where he had their feet and hands tied. They were also kept at the upstairs balcony and denied food and water.

According to the prosecution, Fela allegedly ordered the three men to be brought downstairs on the third day for further interrogation and each of them was lashed 48 strokes of cable.

It was further alleged that the late Sokoya collapsed at the 30th stroke but was continuously flogged until he died.

Fela vehemently denied the accusations and it was reported that the late Sokoya collapsed during fracas among shrine workers.

The charges were eventually dropped as they were not substantial to prove Fela guilty and the Afro beat legend was released.
