He thanked President Tinubu, Yoruba monarchs, and Yoruba sons and daughters worldwide for their support during Igboho’s exile.

However, as at the time of filing this report, the Tinubu-led administration has not released a press statement to such effects nor has any aide reacted to the said development.

Who is Sunday Adeyemo Igboho?

Sunday Igboho, a one-time political thug turned Yoruba nationalist advocating for an independent Yoruba nation.

The Oyo-born Yoruba nationalist gained national prominence for opposing alleged Fulani herdsmen attacks and pushing for self-determination.

Origin of Igboho’s trials?

The Department of State Services reportedly received intelligence that Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho, had stockpiled arms in his house.

The intel prompted the Department of State Services (DSS) on July 1, 2021, to raid the residence of Sunday Igboho in Soka, Ibadan.

The raid, which reportedly occurred around 1:34 am, was a violent and fatal one that led to the sad demise of two associates of Sunday Igboho.

WITHIN NIGERIA learned that the DSS officials came under heavy gun attack by nine men, suspected to be Igboho’s guards, who were armed with AK-47 guns and pump-action rifles.

It was also learned that thirteen people including a woman were arrested and taken to Abuja after two Igboho’s associates namely; Saheed Adisa popularly known as Adogan and his maternal uncle simply identified as Alfa were killed in the shootout.

However, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho, evaded arrest during the exchange between his guards and officials of the Department of State Services.

Sunday Igboho as a fugitive?

The Department of State Services (DSS) declared Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho, wanted after a raid on his Ibadan residence.

According to the DSS, several items, including seven AK-47 rifles, three pump-action guns, and 5,000 rounds of ammunition, were recovered

Arrest and detainment in Benin Republic?

Barely 18 days after the raid on his Ibadan home, Sunday Igboho was arrested at Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, while trying to flee to Germany with his wife, Ropo Adeyemo.

Igboho was arrested by security operatives due to an immigration offense related to possession of a Benin Republic passport.

Ropo Adeyemo, wife of Sunday Igboho, was released after being detained for two hours. She reportedly returned to Germany while Igboho was arraigned at the Court of Appeal in Cotonou, where he faced charges like arms smuggling, illegal migration, inciting violence, and calling for secession of the Yoruba from Nigeria.

Release From Prison?

WITHIN NIGERIA learned that Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho, was released from prison in March 2022 after being detained for 8 months in the Republic of Benin.

It was also learned that Igboho was handed over to Professor Banji Akintoye, leader of Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, and Professor Wale Adeniran, a French language expert.

Findings revealed that Igboho’s release was based on health grounds with a strict condition that he would not leave the medical center or Cotonou.

Igboho’s trip to freedom?

Months after he was released from the Republic of Benin’s prison on medical grounds, Igboho was spotted in Germany in October 2023.

The Yoruba nationalist was seen in a viral video reuniting with his family at Hamburg International Airport to reunite with his family, who are German citizens.

He started living in Germany with his family because he has a resident permit and does not require asylum.

Igboho quietly entered Nigeria in late 2025 and visited some places, including palaces of some traditional rulers like the Ooni of Ife and Oba Olugbon, among others.

His spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, recently issued a statement saying that Sunday Igboho has been cleared by the presidency. Although the Presidency has not yet responded, Sunday Igboho was recently spotted at the Palace of Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Adewolu Rasheed Ladoja.
