Nigerian militants blew up Shell wells
On this day, May 3 in 2008, militants in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta blew up three oil wells operated by Royal Dutch Shell.
According to security sources, the attack would be the fifth one in recent weeks against the petroleum industry.
The attack on the Diebu flow station in southern Bayelsa state came a day after a Nigerian court ordered the trial of rebel leader Henry Okah to take place behind closed doors, prompting a threat of reprisals from the rebel Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).
Governor Oshiomhole’s Aide Assassinated
On this day, May 3 in 2012, a labour activist and principal secretary to then Edo State Governor, Olaitan Oyerinde was murdered in cold blood last night around 2: 00 AM by unknown gunmen in Benin city, the capital of Edo state.
According to reports, Olaitan was shot to death in from of his wife and children by armed assassins who stormed his officials residence in the city.
His murder was apparently related to the Governor Oshiomhole’s upcoming re-election campaign in Edo State.
As an official aide to the governor Olaitan is crucial to the coordination and management of electioneering activities for the governor.
Comrade Olaitan a University of Lagos alumni was well-known and highly respected as an excellent organizer.
