Five years later: Why Tiwa Savage is speaking about her leaked tape again
SHARE

When Tiwa Savage sat down for an interview on The Breakfast Club in July 2026, she did more than revisit one of the most difficult moments of her life. She offered a new perspective on an incident that dominated headlines in 2021.

The Afrobeats star also reflected on the emotional toll the ordeal took on her, explaining how it changed the way she approaches relationships, privacy and even healing. Her latest comments have reignited conversations about the leaked tape, not because the incident is new, but because they reveal details she had never publicly shared before.

Nearly five years after the controversy, Tiwa Savage is telling her story with the benefit of time and reflection. Here is why the singer is speaking about the leaked tape again and what her latest interview reveals.

Who is Tiwa Savage?

Tiwa Savage

Tiwa Savage is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Afrobeats and one of Africa’s most successful female musicians. Born in Lagos and raised partly in the United Kingdom, she studied Accounting at the University of Kent before training in professional music at Berklee College of Music in the United States. Before launching her solo career, she worked as a backing vocalist for global stars including George Michael, Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan and Whitney Houston, while also writing songs for international artistes.

Since returning to Nigeria in the early 2010s, Tiwa Savage has become one of the defining voices of Afrobeats. Her catalogue includes hit songs such as Kele Kele Love, All Over, Koroba and Somebody’s Son, while her albums and EPs have earned critical acclaim both at home and abroad. She has received nominations at prestigious award platforms, signed international record deals and collaborated with stars including Brandy, Nas, Sam Smith, Chris Martin and Beyoncé through The Lion King: The Giftproject, cementing her place among Africa’s biggest musical exports.

By the time her intimate video leaked in October 2021, Tiwa Savage was not just another celebrity in the spotlight. She was at the peak of her career, enjoying global recognition following the release of her Water & Garri EP. That is why the scandal attracted enormous public attention, not only because of who she was, but because it unfolded at a moment when her international profile was soaring.

At The Peak Of Her Career When The Scandal Broke

The leaked tape surfaced during one of the most successful periods of Tiwa Savage’s career. In August 2021, she released her critically acclaimed extended play, Water & Garri, under Motown Records and Universal Music Group. The five-track project blended Afrobeats, R&B and soul while showcasing her versatility as an artist.

The EP’s standout record, Somebody’s Son, featuring American R&B singer Brandy, became one of the biggest songs of the year. The project also featured collaborations with legendary American rapper Nas, Ghanaian singer Amaarae and Nigerian alternative artist Tay Iwar, further strengthening her international profile.

Earlier that year, Tiwa Savage also earned recognition at major award platforms, including a nomination for Outstanding International Song at the 52nd NAACP Image Awards for Tanana. She also received nominations at the MTV Africa Music Awards, reinforcing her status as one of Africa’s biggest exports.

The creative vision behind Water & Garri would later inspire the feature film of the same name, which she executive-produced and released globally.

Against that backdrop, the intimate video leak became one of the biggest talking points on social media at the time. Some believed the attempted blackmail was designed to derail her growing international success. Instead, her career continued to flourish.

How The Leaked Tape Saga Unfolded

The controversy began in October 2021 when Tiwa Savage revealed during an interview on Power 105.1 FM in New York that someone was attempting to blackmail her with an intimate video.

Rather than pay the blackmailer, she chose to speak publicly before the video surfaced. At the time, she explained that she wanted to control the narrative instead of allowing someone else to weaponise the footage against her.

Later that month, the video found its way onto social media despite her refusal to give in to the demands.

Tiwa Savage subsequently explained that the clip had briefly been uploaded to Snapchat by her then-partner while he was trying to save it before it was deleted. However, according to her, a stalker had already downloaded the footage before it disappeared. The leaked video blew up social media at the time

What Tiwa Savage Is Saying Nearly 5 Years Later

Speaking on The Breakfast Club in July 2026, Tiwa Savage revisited the incident with a perspective shaped by time and healing.

During the interview, she revealed that she later discovered the circumstances surrounding the leaked video were different from what she had initially believed.

According to the singer, her then-boyfriend had first told her the video was mistakenly sent out while he was trying to save it. However, she said she later learned that it had allegedly been exposed as part of a bet involving him and his friends. Reflecting on the discovery, she said:

“Even that itself was traumatic because he was my boyfriend, we were in a relationship, and I’m hearing later that it was a bet. So, did you really like me or this was just planned from the beginning?”

For Tiwa Savage, the emotional pain extended beyond the public exposure. She suggested that the greater wound came from the alleged betrayal by someone she trusted.

Looking back on the experience, she admitted that she did not fully process what happened at the time. Instead of viewing herself as someone who should be blamed, she now believes she was the victim.

How The Experience Changed Her

The incident has also changed how Tiwa Savage approaches her personal relationships. During the interview, she explained that she no longer visits romantic partners in hotel rooms because of concerns about hidden cameras.

Instead, she prefers meeting people in environments she considers safe and familiar. As she put it:

“I’m not going to anyone’s hotel cause you can have cameras hidden; yeah, you’re coming to my safe space.”

She also explained that protecting her privacy has become even more important because of her son, saying she wants to keep her personal life away from unnecessary public attention.

Responding Through Music Instead Of Silence

Rather than allow the controversy to define her, Tiwa Savage chose to respond through her music.

In November 2022, she referenced the leaked tape in her hit collaboration Loaded featuring Asake, using humour to show that the incident would not destroy her career.

Speaking on The Breakfast Club, she admitted that making jokes about the controversy was part of her coping mechanism. However, with the benefit of hindsight, she now believes she had not truly dealt with the emotional impact of the experience.

The humour, she suggested, helped her appear strong publicly even while she was still hurting privately.

Rejecting Claims That It Was A Publicity Stunt

One of the most persistent narratives after the video leaked was that the controversy had been orchestrated to promote her music. Tiwa Savage firmly rejected those claims during her latest interview. She said:

“They thought I did it for PR. A lot of people thought, ‘Ah, she’s not relevant anymore and she’s doing this.’ And I’m like, guys, trust me, if I wanted to do that, I would have had better lighting.”

She also revealed that she initially tried to pursue legal action over the incident but eventually abandoned the process because repeatedly revisiting the events became emotionally exhausting.

Why The Conversation Matters Today

Tiwa Savage

Nearly five years after the leaked tape dominated headlines, Tiwa Savage is no longer speaking about the incident to defend herself against public opinion.

Instead, she is revisiting it to explain how deeply it affected her and how her understanding of the experience has evolved.

Her latest interview shifts the conversation away from celebrity scandal and towards trust, privacy, betrayal and the emotional consequences of having one’s private life exposed without consent.

It also serves as a reminder that public controversies often leave lasting personal scars long after social media has moved on.

Conclusion

When Tiwa Savage first addressed the leaked tape in October 2021, her goal was to stay ahead of those trying to blackmail her. Nearly five years later, she is returning to the subject for a different reason.

Her latest interview on The Breakfast Club is less about reliving a painful chapter and more about reclaiming it.

For many, the leaked tape was simply another celebrity headline. For Tiwa Savage, it remains a deeply personal story of betrayal, resilience and healing—one she is now ready to tell in full.
