On August 4, 2008, the Police Service Commission announced the demotion of Nuhu Ribadu from Assistant Inspector-General of Police to Deputy Commissioner of Police.

The decision was made public in a statement issued by the Commission, which said it followed a review of service records and internal procedures. Ribadu, who previously served as an AIG, will revert to the rank of DCP with immediate effect.

The Commission did not give specific reasons for the demotion in its initial release.

The PSC also said other officers across various ranks and commands nationwide were affected by the same disciplinary exercise.

According to the Commission, the action is part of efforts to enforce discipline and uphold standards within the Nigeria Police Force.

Sources within the Commission said the review covered promotions, postings, and conduct during the last service cycle. Officials added that the move was intended to align ranks with established regulations and to address issues identified during an audit.

The demotion of an officer at AIG rank ranks among the most senior disciplinary actions taken by the PSC in recent years, and is expected to generate discussion within the Force.

Nigerian Doctor Contracts Ebola After Treating Liberian Patient at Lagos Airport

On August 4, 2014, Dr. Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, a leading Nigerian physician, contracted Ebola Virus Disease after treating the country’s index patient.

Adadevoh, 56, was a consultant physician at First Consultants Hospital in Obalende, Lagos. She was part of the medical team that received Patrick Sawyer, a Liberian-American civil servant who collapsed upon arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport on July 20.

According to hospital sources, Sawyer was transferred to First Consultants after airport officials flagged him as ill.

Despite pressure to discharge him, Dr. Adadevoh insisted that Sawyer be isolated and tested for Ebola. She overruled requests from Liberian government officials who wanted him released to travel.

“She stood her ground,” a hospital colleague said. “She knew the risk and still put the country first.”

Sawyer tested positive for Ebola and died on July 25. In the days that followed, Dr. Adadevoh and other staff who had contact with him were placed under observation.

Test results later confirmed that Dr. Adadevoh had contracted the virus.

Health experts credit her decision to quarantine Sawyer with slowing what could have become a wider outbreak in Africa’s most populous nation.

“Dr. Adadevoh’s actions bought Nigeria critical time,” said a senior official at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. “She exemplified the highest standard of medical ethics.”
