On September 18, 2010, a prominent businessman and politician, Senator Mahmud Waziri died in Saudi Arabia.
Waziri, born December 13, 1936 in Yola, rose to national prominence in the Second Republic when he was elected Senator for Adamawa District of the old Gongola State on the platform of the Great Nigerian Peoples Party (GNPP) in 1979 and served till 1983.
He served on three key Senate Committees – Transport and Aviation, Banking and Currency, and Finance and Appropriation.
In the build-up to the return to democracy in 1999, Waziri played a decisive role as the pioneer Chairman of the All Peoples Party (APP).
He was also a Presidential aspirant under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in 1992, and later served as Special Adviser on Inter-Party Relations to President Olusegun Obasanjo.
A seasoned administrator, Waziri started his career with the Nigerian Ports Authority where he rose to become Controller of Personnel, and later served as Deputy General Manager and General Manager of the Nigerian Sugar Company, Bacita, before founding the Nigerbras Shipping Company, Lagos.
September 18: Five Farmers Killed by Bandits in Katsina
On September 18, 2020, suspected bandits killed five farmers at Yanteba village in Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State in an early morning raid.
It was learned that the attack, which occurred at about 3:00 a.m. on Thursday, was tragic as the gunmen stormed the village shooting sporadically.
According to the police, the attack was a reprisal after youths of Yanteba village attacked three herders passing through the village two days earlier.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Katsina State Police Command, SP Gambo Isah, said the bandits invaded Yanteba on a revenge mission.
“The bandits stormed Yanteba village at about 3:00 am on Thursday and started shooting their guns which led to the death of the farmers,” Isah said.
He explained: “The youths of Yanteba village saw three herders passing through their village and they gathered and attacked them which led to the death of one person and two others sustained injuries”.
“The youths of Yanteba… two days after the attack on the Fulani youth, the bandits came for a revenge mission where they killed five people,” the police spokesman added.
Isah said officers from Malumfashi Division were deployed to the village and rescued injured victims, and urged residents to desist from taking laws into their own hands.
