On October 4,1960, a 14-man delegation led by the Prime Minister, Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, departed Ikeja Airport for New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly.
It was gathered that the Prime Minister’s entourage was given a warm send-off by members of the Federal Cabinet, Governor-General Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and senior government officials.
Speaking before departure, Sir Abubakar said Nigeria goes to the UN as a new nation committed to peace, freedom and the brotherhood of all peoples.
“Nigeria will stand for peace and for the liberty of all peoples. We are coming to the United Nations to make friends with all,” the Prime Minister declared.
This trip marks Nigeria’s first official appearance at the UN as the 99th member of the world body, following its admission on October 7.
The delegation addressed the General Assembly and held talks with world leaders.
