Eve Esin at 45: From Idemili to Hello Trouble, 5 movies that showcase the Nollywood actress’s talent

Nigerian actress Eve Esin is marking another milestone in a career that has seen her take on different roles and continue to remain visible in Nollywood.

On Saturday, October 17, the actress celebrated her 45th birthday with a video and a message reflecting on the journey so far. She wrote:

“This is 45!. I see growth! I see strength! I see a survivor! I see MERCY!”

As she welcomes what she described as “a beautiful new season”, here are five movies that offer a look at the different sides of her acting career.

1. Idemili

Idemili

Released in Nigeria on May 22, 2014, Idemili was one of the projects that put Eve Esin in the spotlight during the early years of her career. Directed by Ernest Obi, the epic adventure starred Esin as Ekemma, alongside established names including Pete Edochie, Patience Ozokwor, Yul Edochie and Destiny Etiko.

The film gave Esin the opportunity to work in a traditional epic setting and hold her own among some of Nollywood’s familiar faces. Idemili remains a useful reminder of the kind of roles that helped establish Esin as an actress capable of taking on demanding characters.

2. Oshimiri

Oshimiri

A year after Idemili, Esin took on another major role in an epic drama.

Oshimiri, released in Nigeria on February 2, 2015, told the story of a king who refused to heed a priestess’s warning about a looming danger, sending a once-peaceful community into destruction and hardship. Esin played Priestess Kosi, with Henry Anyanwu, Zubby Michael, Queen Nwokoye and Ebele Okaro also in the cast.

The role was significant enough to earn recognition during the awards season. Oshimiri received three nominations and one win, while Esin was among those recognised for her performance in the film. For Esin, the role also showed how well she could carry a character at the centre of an intense traditional story.

Her work around this period coincided with increasing recognition for the actress. In 2015, she was also nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the City People Entertainment Awards.

3. Spirit

Eve Esin

Esin’s career has not been limited to standing in front of the camera. Spirit represents another side of her work because the actress has been credited with making her directorial debut with the movie. Her career records list the film as her first project as a director.

The movie came at a time when Esin was building a reputation for taking on different responsibilities within the industry. From playing characters in traditional dramas to getting involved in the filmmaking process, the project offered another glimpse of her versatility.

4. Blue

Blue

By 2019, Esin was still exploring different kinds of stories. In Blue, she played Esaba in a drama set in a 1964 village. The story follows a schoolteacher who sets out to stop a serial killer but encounters a darker reality along the way. Philip Pratt directed and wrote the film, while Nonso Diobi played Timothy.

The film, which runs for more than two hours, placed Esin in a different kind of story from the traditional epics associated with some of her earlier work. Her role as Esaba is another example of why her filmography cannot easily be reduced to one type of character. Over the years, she has moved between drama, epic stories and other genres while continuing to add to her body of work.

5. Hello Trouble

Hello Trouble

If Idemili represents an earlier stage of Esin’s career, Hello Trouble offers a look at the actress in the more recent YouTube era of Nollywood.

The comedy was released in Nigeria on February 28, 2025. Directed by Samuel Nwosu Nnaemeka and written by Desmond A. Ken, the 125-minute film stars Esin as Olivia, alongside Okoro Bobo, Kira Davids Angel and Ebube Obio. Esin is also credited as a producer.

The film was also released on Esin’s YouTube channel, on the same date and the YouTube run shows just how much the distribution side of Nollywood has changed. The movie has attracted more than 5 million views on the channel, showing that Esin is not only continuing to act but is also participating in the direct-to-YouTube model that has become increasingly visible in Nigerian filmmaking.

Hello Trouble connects the actress’s established screen career with the newer way audiences are consuming Nollywood movies.

Conclusion

Eve Esin

At 45, Eve Esin has plenty to look back on, but her birthday message suggests she is more interested in what lies ahead.

“Cheers to a beautiful new season unfolding in all its glory,” she wrote, before declaring that the new chapter would bring “COMPLETENESS – nothing broken, nothing missing, and nothing lacking.”

From the traditional world of Idemili and Oshimiri to the different demands of Blue and the YouTube audience reached by Hello Trouble, her career continues to show an actress willing to explore different sides of the craft.

And if her birthday message is anything to go by, Esin sees 45 not as a pause, but as the beginning of another chapter.
