American missionary Alex Barbir has stirred massive reactions online after questioning what he described as the culture of excessive reverence for religious leaders among some Nigerian Christians.
Barbir, in trending clip, made the remarks while reflecting on the backlash he said he received after posting a video criticizing Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), over comments Barbir interpreted as supportive of President Bola Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria’s insecurity challenges.
In his statement, Barbir said:
“Recently, I made a video criticizing popular Nigerian Pastor for defending failed President Tinubu’s handling of insecurity in Nigeria. Many Nigerians attacked me for criticizing their ‘Papa.’ This opened my eyes to a major issue in Nigeria: Why do some Nigerian Christians idolize and worship their pastors and religious leaders? Why are people kneeling before pastors with private jets, especially when innocent Christians have continued to suffer and die?”
Through the statement, the American missionary reteirated that the strong public reaction to his criticism reflects what he believes is an unhealthy level of loyalty toward influential church leaders. He argued that some believers appear unwilling to tolerate criticism of their pastors, even on issues involving national governance or public affairs.
Barbir also questioned why some worshippers show extraordinary acts of reverence toward wealthy religious leaders despite the country’s ongoing security, Christians’ prosecution and humanitarian challenges.
His remarks have since generated widespread discussion, with supporters describing them as a call for greater accountability, while critics argue they unfairly generalize Nigerian Christians and disrespect widely respected religious figures.
