Children’s Day 2026: Fear, grief & celebrity reactions dominating social media
SHARE

Every May 27, Nigeria celebrates Children’s Day with school parades, family moments and heartfelt tributes to the nation’s youngest citizens. But Children’s Day 2026 carried a much darker mood. Instead of joyful celebrations, the country woke up to reminders of disturbing reports and viral videos linked to the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, leaving many Nigerians shocked, angry and heartbroken.

As conversations about insecurity and child safety took over social media, celebrities including Falz and KieKie used their platforms not to celebrate, but to mourn, pray and demand action. Their emotional reactions sparked a wider national conversation, with many Nigerians insisting that the repeated attacks on children can no longer be treated as normal.

Falz says “there is nothing happy” about Children’s Day

Falz

While just a few celebrities shared colourful family photos and celebratory messages, Nigerian rapper and activist Folarin Falana aka Falz took a completely different approach. Instead of celebrating, the outspoken entertainer used Children’s Day 2026 to draw attention to the worsening insecurity crisis affecting Nigerian children.

In a viral video shared online, Falz said there was “nothing happy” about this year’s Children’s Day celebration, arguing that the country could not genuinely celebrate while dozens of children remained in captivity.

“Miserable Children’s Day. Over 40 still missing in Oyo. Kidnappers getting richer by the day because our government allow children to be tortured and then reward the criminals with handsome ransom payments,” he wrote in part.

Clearly angered by the situation, the rapper criticised both the federal and state governments for what he described as a failure to protect citizens and secure the release of victims. He also condemned the political atmosphere in the country, expressing frustration that politicians were already focused on re-election campaigns while families were mourning and children remained missing.

KieKie says the tragedy is “messing with” her mind as a mother

Kiekie

Media personality and content creator KieKie admitted the disturbing reports deeply affected her emotionally as a mother.

“It’s Children’s Day but the children are not here. This one is messing with my brain. And I’m looking at my child, God forbid she’s taken away from me,” she said emotionally.

KieKie said she could not stop imagining the pain families of the abducted children must be experiencing, adding that the situation was difficult for her mind to process.

Kehinde Bankole says Nigeria cannot celebrate while children remain unsafe

Kehinde Bankole

Nollywood actress Kehinde Bankole also joined the growing calls for accountability, insisting Nigerians could not genuinely celebrate Children’s Day while children continued to be abducted.

“We cannot say Happy Children’s Day if consistently the children continue to get taken,” she wrote.

The actress referenced the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapping, explaining that the latest tragedy brought back painful memories of the national trauma that shocked the country years ago.

“We will keep asking, we will not be quiet. The Nigerian Government has a duty to its people,” she added while calling for lasting solutions to insecurity.

Chinenye Nnebe asks “Which way Nigeria?”

Chinenye Nnebe

Actress Chinenye Nnebe questioned how Nigerians were expected to celebrate Children’s Day while families remained trapped in fear and uncertainty.

“Which way Nigeria? 46 innocent children kidnapped. How do we celebrate Children’s Day when our children aren’t safe?” she wrote.

The actress stressed that the victims were simply children trying to go to school and build better futures for themselves, adding that parents across the country were now living in fear and sleeplessness.

Biola Bayo questions the future Nigerian children are inheriting

Biola Bayo

Actress and media personality Biola Bayo questioned whether Nigerian children could still genuinely be described as “the leaders of tomorrow” amid growing insecurity.

“It’s Children’s Day, some families are mourning while some are crying and helpless while our leaders are busy concentrating on election,” she wrote.

Biola also made a direct appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pleading for urgent intervention and action to secure the safe return of the victims.

Mercy Eke asks if Nigerian children are truly “safe or happy”

Mercy Eke

Reality TV star Mercy Eke also reacted emotionally, questioning whether Nigerian children could genuinely be described as safe or happy amid reports of kidnappings and insecurity.

“To the innocent children who should be at home playing, laughing, and living freely, our hearts are with you,” she wrote.

Mercy also called on the government and security agencies to take responsibility for protecting children and ensuring the victims are reunited safely with their families.

Bimbo Ademoye says the disturbing images “dug a painful hole” in her heart

Bimbo Ademoye

Actress Bimbo Ademoye admitted she could not stop imagining her own seven-year-old nephew in such a terrifying situation after seeing videos allegedly showing the abducted children being tortured.

“Seeing the babies with cane marks on their backs dug a very deep painful hole in my heart,” she wrote.

Bimbo also expressed frustration over what she described as a repeated cycle where public outrage fades after a few weeks without meaningful change.

Liz Da-Silva says Children’s Day should never be marked by fear and pain

Liz Dasilva

Actress Liz Da-Silva described the reports involving abducted children and teachers as deeply heartbreaking.

“Children’s Day should never be marked by pain, fear, or anger,” she wrote.

The actress urged Nigerians not to become desensitised to violence and insecurity, stressing that the victims were children with dreams, families and futures deserving of protection.

Ruth Kadiri says “home is no longer home”

Ruth Kadiri

Filmmaker and actress Ruth Kadiri expressed frustration over the growing insecurity crisis, saying fear and uncertainty have become part of daily life in Nigeria.

“Stay and build your country they say. Stay where? Home is no longer safe. Home is no longer home,” she wrote.

The actress also referenced recent incidents involving students and NYSC members, warning Nigerians against believing tragedy could never happen to them.

Sotayo Gaga says she cannot even say “Happy Children’s Day”

Sotayo Gaga

Actress Sotayo Gaga admitted she could not bring herself to celebrate Children’s Day amid the pain and fear dominating the country.

“I can’t even say Happy Children’s Day, just because there’s honestly nothing to be happy about,” she wrote.

The actress questioned whether the voices of concerned Nigerians were even reaching the country’s leadership as insecurity continued to worsen.

Faithia Williams says children should be “safe, not stolen from classrooms”

Faithia Williams

Actress Faithia Williams stressed that children should be protected and cared for, not taken from places meant to guarantee their safety and education.

“Today is Children’s Day. They should be safe, not stolen from their classrooms,” she wrote.

Faithia also prayed for the safe return of the abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

Adesua Etomi says Nigerians “do not have the luxury of being tired”

Adesua Etomi

Actress Adesua Etomi-Wellington admitted she struggled to find words while reacting to the disturbing reports involving abducted children and teachers.

“We don’t have the luxury of being tired. The wicked aren’t tired,” she wrote.

Adesua also encouraged Nigerians to continue speaking up and demanding action, warning against allowing insecurity to become accepted as normal.

Bambam says Nigerians are “not okay”

Bambam

Reality TV star and actress Bambam summed up the emotional exhaustion many Nigerians expressed online during this year’s Children’s Day celebration.

“Lord God, it’s too much… the children… the deaths… We are not okay,” she wrote emotionally.

Her reaction reflected the grief, helplessness and emotional fatigue that dominated social media conversations throughout the day.

A Children’s Day overshadowed by fear and reflection

Unlike previous years filled with colourful school uniforms, matching family photos and cheerful tributes, Children’s Day 2026 in Nigeria unfolded under a much heavier atmosphere online. Across Instagram, X and TikTok, many celebrities and everyday Nigerians admitted they struggled to celebrate while disturbing reports about abducted schoolchildren continued circulating nationwide.

For many public figures, this year’s celebration became less about festivities and more about advocacy, prayer and frustration. Hashtags such as #BringThemHome, #PrayForOyoChildren and #ProtectTheChildren trended alongside emotional videos, prayers and calls for urgent government action.

The emotional reactions also revealed a deeper national anxiety among parents and families, many of whom admitted they could no longer look at their own children without imagining the pain the affected families must be enduring.

Conclusion

What began as an annual celebration of childhood quickly transformed into something far more emotional and sobering for many Nigerians. Instead of focusing solely on colourful festivities and cheerful tributes, celebrities across entertainment and media used their platforms to spotlight fear, grief, insecurity and the growing concerns surrounding the safety of Nigerian children.

From Falz’s fiery criticism of leadership to the emotional prayers of Bambam, KieKie, Faithia Williams and others, one message remained consistent throughout: children cannot truly be celebrated in a society where many families are still living in fear.
