Manchester City have launched a redress scheme for survivors of historic child sex abuse. The Premier League champions initiated a QC-led review in November 2016 following the allegations made against Barry Bennell.
Bennell, a former Crewe Alexandra youth coach and City scout, was jailed for 31 years in February 2018 having been convicted of 50 offences against 12 boys aged eight to 15 between 1979 and 1991 by a jury at Liverpool Crown Court.
City said that their ongoing review “led to the uncovering of serious allegations of child sex abuse in respect of another individual, John Broome” and that their redress scheme applies to the victims of Broome – who died in 2010 – and Bennell.
A City statement added: “The club reiterates its heartfelt sympathy to all victims for the unimaginably traumatic experiences that they endured.
“All victims were entitled to expect full protection from the kind of harm they suffered as a result of their sexual abuse as children.”
