The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) operating in Sokoto State on Tuesday urged the House of Assembly to intensify its oversight functions to enable Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to be boosted.
Ibrahim Shuni, the coalition chairman, made the call while briefing newsmen after a meeting with the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation in respect of the state’s 2022 budget.
According to him, boosting IGR will aid the state Governments in its bid to complete all outstanding projects highlighted in the 2022 appropriation bill.
“When you look at the budget, the state Government is very ambitious, but there is no way you can do development work when revenue generation is not encouraging”
“We also looked at the main document and made some observations, some of the projects that had no specific locations and there were typographical errors” he said.
Shuni added that their discussion with the assembly members was very successful, noting that the lawmakers noted their observations.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Budget, Alhaji Mainasara Ahmad, said the meeting was very fruitful, pointing out that the CSOs observations were generous.
“The issue of IGR, we all feel it must go up so that we can accommodate the projects undertaken by the state government” he said.
In his remarks, the Committee Chairman, Malami Basakkwace (PDP/Sokoto-South II), expressed appreciation to the CSOs and other non-governmental organizations for their support.
He assured them that the house committee would take cognisance of their observations and recommendations and appealed for more support from them.
