The regional leadership of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) meets in Lome, Togo,
to accelerate and scale-up programme interventions in new strategic plan, the fund’s Media Associate, Hajiya Kori Habib, said.
Habib disclosed in a statement in Abuja on Monday that the Regional Leadership Meeting (RLM) would deliberate on “Leveraging the 2022-2025 Strategic Plan to achieve the three Transformative Results in West and Central Africa.”
She noted that the meeting, holding between Feb. 28 and March 2, would be opened by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Togo,
Victoire Tomegah Dogbé.
She stated that “the meeting will be attended in person by the UNFPA Deputy Executive Director for Programmes, Dr Diene Keita,
and the UNFPA Regional Director for West and Central Africa, Ms Argentina Matavel Piccin.”
Habib quoted Piccin as saying “we are looking forward to the opportunity to reflect internally on how we will accelerate
the realisation of the three transformative results.
“We want to reflect on the realisation of the three zeros in this region as our contribution to improving the lives of women, girls and
young people within the broader framework of UNFPA’s Strategic Plan 2022-2025, the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the UN
2030 Agenda, as championed by the UN Secretary-General.”
Piccin also said that “the UNFPA anticipates profound internal reflections and rich discussions.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the RLM will focus on three key thematic areas, namely: the new UNFPA Strategic Plan 2022-2025
with particular focus on the urgency of accelerating the fulfilment of promises for achieving the three transformative results.
The second area of focus is the adjustments to be made, and the required support services for the development of the new Country Programme
Documents (CPDs), which are the main vehicles for the implementation of the Strategic Plan 2022-2025.
The meeting will also identify existing challenges and bottlenecks which prevent women and girls from accessing rights and choices in the context of the three transformative outcomes.
The Regional Leadership Meeting is part of UNFPA’s strategic meetings held periodically in one of the countries within the West and Central Africa region.
In addition to the presence of the Deputy Executive Director for Programme and the UNFPA Regional Director for West and Central Africa, this year’s RLM will be enhanced by the participation of several other directors from headquarters.
Resident Representatives, Deputies and Assistant Representatives from all 23 country offices, as well as Regional Advisors would also attend.
