Abiru (Lagos- East) who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Industries, gave the advice in a statement through by his Special Assistant on Media an Publicity, Mr Enitan Olukotun, to commemorate the 2022 Democracy Day on Sunday in Lagos.
He said despite imperfections and challenges, there was also the need for Nigerians to foster national unity.
The senator urged Nigerians not to give up on the country but rather, hope for the best.
He said that nations that were being celebrated today, have had their fair share of national tribulations and challenges in their journey into nationhood.
Abiru said: “I join esteemed constituents of the Lagos East Senatorial District and Nigerians in general in commemorating the 2022 Democracy Day.
“No doubt, the democratic journey that started in 1999 is not without hiccups.
“The challenges notwithstanding, we should not be quick to dismiss commemoration of Democracy Day, especially the tortuous June 12 struggle as non-event.
“Nations that are celebrated for their high democratic ethos today have had their own share of tribulations in their journey.
“The United States of America that is reputed as the bastion of the world’s democracy is obviously not without her challenges.
“Despite imperfections and challenges, I urge all Nigerians not to despair but rather continue to seek ways of consolidating on the gains of the nation’s fledgling democracy,” he said.
He also urged eligible voters in Nigeria, particularly those resident in his constituency to register for the Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) so as not to be disenfranchised at elections.
He advised citizens to keep hope alive saying: ‘Our challenges are daunting but not insurmountable! Nigeria shall be great again.”
