Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) has appealed to members of the public to help in the protection of power formations in their domain.
A statement by Ibrahim Sani-Shawa, the firm’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer,i on Thursday in Kano, said the appeal was due to incessant theft of power equipment.
He said that the menace had caused serious economic losses and poor power supply to consumers.
“Those vandalising our equipment sneak into our transformers to steal cables, oil and other valuables.
“Such act exposes the general public and even the perpetrators to danger,” he said.
Sani-Shawa urge members of the public to report or apprehend such a vandal and hand him over to the nearest security outfit in the domain.
In another news, the Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government(LG), Mr Wasiu Adesina, on Thursday urged Ikorodu residents to plant trees across the community to ensure environmental sustainability.
Adesina gave the advice during the year 2022 Annual Tree Planting Campaign with the theme ‘In Harmony with Nature’, at Ikorodu Health Centre, in Agbele Grammar School, Lagos.
Reports have it that Lagos State, on July 14 every year, commemorates Tree Planting Day.
It is celebrated in the 20 LGs and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDA) across the state.
Adesina said, “I am delighted to welcome all to this laudable programme in commemorating tradition.
“We are ready to plant more trees, to achieve the global mission to enrich our mother Earth to its fulfillness.”
According to him, the tree planting exercise was established 25 years ago and is going on in the spirit of continuity.
“It is the mandate of this administration to uphold the good vision while gearing up to be environmentally compliant and socially responsible to the community,” he said.
The chairman said Lagos State was faced with increasing population along with pressure of industrialisation and vehicular emission.
He said this led to a rise in urban pollution affecting air, water, land and also the ozone layer, drastically altering climatic changes.
Adesina enjoined non governmental organisations and others to partner the LG on tree planting.
The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, in his speech, said that over a decade, the tradition of tree planting across the state had contributed to building a greener and healthier environment.
Hamzat said that this year’s occasion was no different and should be seen as yet another way to express the love for nature and promote a balance in the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations.
“This year’s theme: “In Harmony with Nature” reminds us of the need to protect our relationship with nature.
“Our gratitude to the diverse species of living creatures including trees tends to be forgotten in our busy lives, as we take for granted the interdependent web that sustains human life with clean water, food, oxygen, fertile soil, climate regulation and more,” he said.
