Sadiya Farouq, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development on Friday opened training for stream two independent monitors of the National Social Investment Programe (NSIP) in.Delta.

Farouq, who performed the function in Asaba,  said the NSIP programme was created by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2016 with the mandate of lifting citizens out of poverty through various social interventions.

The minister, represented by the NSIP Team Leader South South, Mrs Margaret Chuka-Ogwude, said the independent monitors would supervise the programme in their various communities across the state.

According to her, the social investment interventions included the job creation programme-NPower, National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP).

Others are Conditional Cash Transfer Programme (CCT) and the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP).

She said that the team would monitor participating schools, households and market clusters with the focus of ensuring that the primary objectives of the NSIPs were achieved,

She recalled that the training was inaugurated on June 9, in Abuja, adding that the ministry had to replicate training in Delta.

”Stream 1 of this programme had 4,452 Independent monitors trained and enrolled across the country in February and March, 2021 as monitors of NSIP.

”They were trained and onboarded by my minstry in collaboration with the State Focal Persons and NSIP officials.

”Additionally, the.ministry provided working tools in form of tablets for them to carry out monitoring activities on the field starting from June 2021,” Farouq stated.

The minister said that monitors was one of the most important components of the  NSIP, adding that her ministry layed special emphasis on ensuring its programmes were closely monitored.

“We have monitors in every local government where the NSIP are being implemented.

” Using the Social Investment Management Information System (SIMIS) application, our Stream 1 monitors have been uploading their report on a daily basis and this gives us good visibility into programme implementation at the various communities.

”The incoming Stream 2 monitors are expected to continue using the same platform to report their activities from the field.”

Farouq explained that the training was strategic as the ministry trained additional men and women who would also receive their engagement letters and tablets as working tools for monitoring the programme.

”Monitoring at the state requires that Independent Monitors work hand in hand with the State NSIP team, as their work cannot be done in a vacuum.

”Any Independent Monitor found intimidating or harassing a beneficiary will be taken off the programme.

”We are also working with Non-Governmental Organisations and civil society groups that will support you in your monitoring assignment,” she added.

On his part, the state Programme Manager of N-Power, Mr Henry Aggreh urged the monitors to be focused and committed to their jobs.

He said, ”the Federal Government is engaging you so that the NSIP can succeed and you all must ensure that the programme succeed in your local government areas.”

Also, Mr Fajana Adetubosun,
NSIP Zonal Consultant (SouthSouth), while congratulating the monitors, advised them to ensure that they monitored each of the programmes in their local government.

He commended the ministry of humanitarian affairs for the initiative which is geared towards poverty alleviation.

Also, Delta State Independent monitor, Coordinator, Mr Sunday Edevwie said that NSIP programme had mpacted on the people of the state, especially children and youths.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 26 monitors from the the various local government areas of Delta were selected for the programme.
