Following the identification of the first five cases of the highly transmissible Omicron variant of coronavirus at the beginning of this month, Cyprus’ Health Ministry reported a sudden surge in infections caused by the highly transmissible Omicron variant of coronavirus late Friday.
According to the ministry, 28 new Omicron infections have been discovered, 20 of which can be linked to people who have been under investigation as “possible Omicron cases” since December 10.
The remaining eight Omicron cases were all related to travel.
The five original cases were also travel-related, and they were discovered after a group of high school students and teachers returned from an educational trip to Glasgow, Scotland, on December 1.
The increase in new Omicron cases alarmed the Health Ministry, as COVID-19 hospitals are already at capacity.
Cyprus currently records approximately 700 coronavirus cases per day.
To date, the Delta mutation has been the most common.
According to scientists, the Omicron mutation is expected to drive the pandemic soon, with the latest wave peaking in January.
In recent days, the authorities have tightened the health restrictions.
The majority of new infections are linked to travel, and the vast majority of those infected are unvaccinated.
