Game of squash set to be revived in Enugu

A Sport oriented association identified as Enugu State Squash Racket Association has vowed to revive the game of Squash in the state.

This was made public by the Chairman of the association, Mr Paul Okechukwu, on Saturday at the  3rd Enugu State Independence Close Squash Championship Competition, which took place at the Nigeria Army, 82 Div, Enugu Dragon Squash Court.

Okechukwu, in his statement, said the association had come to stay as it set its focus on reviving the game.

“The game of Squash has been in existence in the state for years just that downturn in economy Economy affected its growth,” he said.

He called on the state government to come to their aid as the game will serve the state in national and international competitions.

“We need the state government assistant in the area of venue where we can built a court.

“If we get a Squash Court at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, the game will grow as stadium remain attractive sight.

“We know there are five Glass Squash Courts built by the state government laying fallow at Nsukka but we need courts in Enugu metropolis,” he said.

Okechuwkwu said the association had been making use of private Courts for their training and competition and it cost them a lot.

Speaking on the ongoing squash competition in the state, the chairman said 52 players were competing in the under-13, under-19, and Veterans’ categories of the competition.

“We have under 13 boys and girls, under 19 boys and girls, Veteran and Super Veteran.

“Veteran is for those within the age of 45 and 54 while Super Veteran is for those that have reached 55 years and above.

“At the competition, we have 32 boys and 18 girls for under 13 category while the Veteran and Super Veteran are eight that registered.

“We are yet to get the actual number of participants for under 19 boys and girls as the draw have not being concluded,” he said.
